Ask most owners if their business is sellable, and they'll point to revenue. A buyer will ask a very different question: what happens to this business the day you stop showing up?

If the honest answer is "it falls apart," you don't have a sellable business yet. You have a well-paying job you happen to own.

Buyers are pricing out your absence, not your revenue

A business that depends entirely on the owner for sales relationships, key decisions, and day-to-day operations is a much riskier purchase than one that runs on its own systems and people. Buyers know this, and they price it in, through a lower multiple, a longer earn-out, or a deal that falls apart entirely during due diligence once they see how much of the business lives in your head.

The test: could you disappear for a month?

Not a vacation where you're still checking your phone every hour. An actual month where you're unreachable. If the honest answer is that things would fall apart within a week, that's not a sign you have bad employees. It's a sign the business hasn't been built to run without you yet, and that's very fixable with the right systems and the right people in the right seats.

What buyers actually look for

  • Documented processes, not tribal knowledge that lives only in your head
  • A leadership team that can make real decisions without checking with you first
  • Financials that are clean, current, and easy to verify
  • Revenue that doesn't depend on relationships only you hold

Start building toward this now, even if selling is years away

The work that makes a business sellable is the same work that makes it easier to run today: real delegation, a capable leadership team, and systems that don't live only in your head. You don't build this in the six months before a sale. You build it over years, which means the best time to start is well before you're actually ready to sell.

If building a business, and a leadership team, that can run without you is the real goal, our Succession Planning & Talent Readiness program is built specifically around getting there.
