You've decided coaching is the right move. Your team hasn't decided that yet, and that gap is exactly where a lot of coaching initiatives quietly fail. People who feel like coaching is being done to them show up differently than people who feel like it's being done for them.
Buy-in isn't the same as compliance
Your team will show up to a mandated session. They won't necessarily engage with it, act differently afterward, or bring their real challenges to the table. Compliance gets attendance. Buy-in gets actual change. If you only aim for the first one, don't be surprised when the results don't show up.
Explain the why before the what
Most resistance to coaching comes from people not understanding why it's happening, not from them being against self-improvement. Before rolling anything out, be direct about the actual problem you're trying to solve, whether that's inconsistent performance, unclear goals, or a culture that needs to shift, and be honest that this applies to leadership too, not just the team being coached.
Let early wins do the convincing
Skeptics rarely get convinced by an announcement. They get convinced by watching someone they respect get a real result. Identify one or two people likely to engage early and genuinely benefit, and let their experience spread naturally through the team instead of trying to sell the whole group on it at once.
What a coach and a consultant actually do differently
A consultant usually hands you an answer, a plan, a report, and moves on. A coach works alongside you and your team to build the capability to solve this kind of problem yourselves, going forward. That distinction matters for buy-in: people are often more resistant to being told what to do than they are to being developed, and framing coaching as development rather than correction changes how it lands.
Buy-in isn't something you announce into existence. It's built the same way trust is: through clarity, consistency, and a few visible wins.
If getting a team genuinely engaged, not just compliant, is the challenge, our Team Coaching with AI Coaching & Assessments is designed around building that kind of real engagement.
