A prospect hesitates on price. Your salesperson, not wanting to lose the deal, knocks off ten percent. The deal closes. Everyone feels good about it, for about a month, until you look at your margins and realize this happens on nearly every deal, and it's quietly eating your profitability alive.

Discounting is usually a confidence problem, not a pricing problem

Most sales teams don't discount because your prices are actually too high. They discount because they don't know how to hold the line when a prospect pushes back, and caving feels safer than risking the deal. If your team can't clearly explain why your price is what it is, they'll fold every time someone questions it.

Fix the offer before you fix the pitch

One of the biggest reasons pricing conversations get messy is that the offer itself is too customized. If every deal is negotiated from scratch, every deal becomes a negotiation. Standardizing your offerings into a few clear, repeatable packages does two things: it makes your pricing easier to explain and defend, and it makes your delivery easier to scale, since you're not reinventing the wheel for every client.

Raising prices you haven't touched in years

If you haven't raised your prices in a while because you're worried about losing long-term clients, you're not alone, and that fear is usually bigger than the actual risk. Most long-term clients value the relationship and the reliability more than they value a price that hasn't moved since you started working together. A clear, advance notice with a straightforward explanation loses far fewer clients than owners expect.

Give your team the actual words to use

Don't just tell your sales team to "hold firm on pricing." Give them specific language for the moments that actually come up: when a prospect asks for a discount outright, when they compare you to a cheaper competitor, when they go quiet after hearing the number. Role-play these scenarios until the responses feel natural, not rehearsed.

The goal isn't to never lose a deal over price. It's to stop losing margin on deals you were always going to win anyway.
