What’s Your Plan B for 2013?

Van Morrison, singer and songwriter, has been around a LONG time. He wrote the hit song “GLORIA” sung in 1964, followed by solo work in the 60s and 70s like “Brown Eyed Girl” and “Moondance”. After all these years, he has just released a new album titled “Born to Sing, No Plan B”.

Although I admire his talent and the longevity of his career, I don’t recommend this approach for my business clients. As you look toward next year, you absolutely should have a Plan A. This is a plan of how you want your business and personal life to look. Call it “Where I want to be on December 31, 2013”. You should also have a plan for the steps to get you there.

Because the world is changing so quickly, we need to be flexible. That’s where the Plan B comes in. Thinking ahead of time about what might impact your A plan allows you to be ready for those changes. Although you still focus on your Plan A, you are prepared to adapt.

Talking with a client yesterday, he mentioned that while budgeting for next year, he had not only a Plan B (worst case scenario), he also had a couple Plan C options. His comment was that the Plan Cs made the Plan B look better than it would have otherwise.
