{"id":2004,"date":"2010-06-07T08:00:22","date_gmt":"2010-06-07T12:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thegrowthcoach.com\/boston-west\/business-owner-stop-doing-what-you-stink-at-doing"},"modified":"2010-06-07T08:00:22","modified_gmt":"2010-06-07T12:00:22","slug":"business-owner-stop-doing-what-you-stink-at-doing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thegrowthcoach.com\/boston-west\/business-owner-stop-doing-what-you-stink-at-doing","title":{"rendered":"Business Owner, Stop Doing What You Stink At Doing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Business owner, as  your virtual business coach, I\u00a0formally give you permission to stop doing  tasks\u00a0you dislike doing&#8230; and probably stink at doing. <\/strong> Most  people wouldn&#8217;t think this was necessary but both of us know better.\u00a0  Entrepreneurs around the world are caught in a\u00a0vicious, habitual cycle of doing  tasks and roles they dislike and that\u00a0annoy them, frustrate them, and drain  them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Instead of focusing  on their strengths and unique talents (which they do well and which energizes  them),\u00a0most owners\u00a0persistent in handling the stuff they\u00a0stink at  doing. <\/strong> Why?\u00a0 They don&#8217;t know better options and because nobody  in their world provides them with tough-love coaching and challenges them on the  insanity of doing\u00a0tasks they dislike and\u00a0don&#8217;t do well. We&#8217;ll change that here  and now!<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>So here comes some in-your-face coaching.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>As a business owner, what do you  stink at doing?<\/strong> That&#8217;s right, let&#8217;s get a bit negative and real  honest to make some progress in your focus, effectiveness and results.\u00a0  <strong>What roles or tasks do  you\u00a0truly stink at?\u00a0\u00a0What are the things you don&#8217;t do well?\u00a0 That you  dislike\u00a0doing?\u00a0 What activities drain your energy?\u00a0 What tasks do you  routinely\u00a0tackle at your company that go against\u00a0your natural talents and  abilities? <\/strong>Make a\u00a0quick\u00a0list of what you stink at doing.\u00a0 Got  it?\u00a0 Good.<\/p>\n<p>If you are like most of our business coaching clients when they first come to  The Growth Coach, you probably have dozens of <strong>low-value tasks (clutter) you  painfully and\/or incompetently handle each and every day.<\/strong> You  just tough it out.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Again, because of your habits and\u00a0limiting beliefs,  you know of no other way.\u00a0 <strong>Many of these low-value tasks you  did at the\u00a0start\u00a0of your company and you simply failed to pass them on to others  or\u00a0stop doing them as your company grew.<\/strong> Put simply, your  business evolved but your tasks and roles did not.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Odds are, like most  owners, you seldom question the importance of the tasks you routinely do and  seldom evaluate how wisely you spend your valuable time.\u00a0 Most likely, you just  instinctively dive in and start doing.<\/strong> Therefore, you rarely  reflect on, prioritize and make adjustments to the countless tasks you handle  each and every day&#8230;<strong>most of them by the way are a\u00a0true  waste of your time, talents and energy.<\/strong> Sadly, you continue to  do the wrong type of work.\u00a0 Stop the insanity!<\/p>\n<p>Look carefully at the\u00a0answers your wrote down on your &#8220;Tasks I Stink at  Doing&#8221; list.\u00a0 <strong>If you  aren&#8217;t good at doing these tasks and don&#8217;t like doing these tasks, why on earth  do them?<\/strong> Seriously, are you nuts?\u00a0 Aren&#8217;t you the owner?\u00a0 Why  put up with this approach?\u00a0 Please note, working less does NOT make you LAZY.\u00a0  Focus on the vital few tasks, not the trivial many.\u00a0 Stop confusing busyness  with productivity.<\/p>\n<p>Make some changes.\u00a0 Off-load some of the trivial tasks you stink at doing and  don\u2019t enjoy doing.\u00a0 If you have no employees, why\u00a0not finally hire some to  delegate to or at least outsource some of these tasks to third parties.\u00a0 If you  have employees already, <strong>aren&#8217;t there others in the  company\u00a0who could do these tasks better than you, who would enjoy them more than  you,\u00a0and who can do them at cheaper hourly rates than you? <\/strong> Most  likely yes!\u00a0 Then give\u00a0those tasks\u00a0up.\u00a0 Let go.\u00a0 Dare to change your ways  and\u00a0challenge your habits and assumptions.<\/p>\n<p>Do me a favor.\u00a0 For each task you wrote down on your list, <strong>write next to it YOUR COMMITMENT  going forward to either drastically DIMINISH, DELETE,\u00a0DELEGATE or\u00a0DELAY that  task.<\/strong> I know &#8220;delay&#8221; is a cop out, but if you delay long  enough, odds are you will realize\u00a0that certain tasks are not even necessary or  important.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A key part of  business coaching is to get owners to do what they do best and shed the  rest.<\/strong> <strong>To focus on those tasks and  roles\u00a0(unique strengths and abilities) that\u00a0energize you, excite you, and that  you do extremely well, almost effortlessly. <\/strong>Unless you stop  focusing on your weaknesses, you can&#8217;t leverage your strengths.<\/p>\n<p>Because The Growth Coach has business coaches throughout North America  working with thousands of business owners each year on these very challenges, I  could list dozens and dozens of low-value tasks and clutter that most owners  typically don&#8217;t do well or enjoy.\u00a0 However, that would do us no good here.\u00a0  You\u00a0now know what YOU, in particular, stink at.\u00a0 You just wrote down your list.\u00a0  <strong>That&#8217;s where YOU need  to focus.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>As the owner, it&#8217;s  time to stop doing the wrong type of work and start doing the right kind of  work. <\/strong> Instead of being so eager to do lots of things,  <strong>be just as eager  to\u00a0drastically DIMINISH, DELETE, DELEGATE, or DELAY those tasks and roles you  stink at doing. <\/strong>That will be a great start for better  productivity, focus, results, and sanity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Business owner, as your virtual business coach, I\u00a0formally give you permission to stop doing tasks\u00a0you dislike doing&#8230; and probably stink at doing.
