Last week, I had the opportunity for the first time in my life to go up in a helicopter. One of my business partners owns his own 4-seat helicopter and was recently certified to fly. Being the trusting soul that I am, we decided to go flying on a beautiful and sunny day in Cincinnati. We ended up flying around for an hour (felt like 15 minutes) before we stopped at a small airport and had lunch. One of the coolest things about a helicopter is that you can pretty much take-off and land anywhere you want and that flexibility in turn enables you to visit anywhere you want. With so few restrictions and rules, you feel quite free and powerful.
Since I like most types of thrill rides and experiences (roller coasters, bungee jumping, scuba diving, hot air ballooning, etc) and any vehicle (land, air or water) that goes fast, I felt prepared and very excited to have my first helicopter ride. However, I really didn't know what to expect.
The entire front of the helicopter was a big clear bubble in which to see the world -- straight out and even straight down. I loved that, some people would not. Most of the time we were going between 80-100 miles per hour and were generally 700 feet off the ground. At that combination of speed and height, you see the countryside, structures, and streets with an unbelievable clarity. While you lose some small details, you get to see the big picture and how things relate. You get to see the entire puzzle for once and how the pieces fit together.
We spent time seeing the beauty of our various communities and suburbs, the buildings of our downtown, our professional sports stadiums, farms, lakes, golf courses, the winding Ohio River, highway and street systems, structures of every shape and size, and even a few local airports. While I felt as free and nimble as a dragonfly on the take-offs and landings, what I truly enjoyed was flying around, circling, and at times, simply hovering over sites to get a better look. What a very special vantage point to see the world.
It's funny, but once you are up in a helicopter, you notice things for the first time. You see swimming pools everywhere and even ponds and lakes you didn't know that existed. You see certain buildings and streets for the first time. You get to see the magnitude of shopping malls, rivers, lakes, farms, sky scrappers, etc. You notice how communities connect. You see how the highways, streets and communities interrelate. You see the big picture with clarity. You see how the pieces of the puzzle all fit together.
Then it hit me. Business coaching is very much like that helicopter ride. Business coaching done right enables the owner to elevate above the ordinary details and see new things and even old things with new clarity and insights. You are pulled out of the details so you can see the bigger picture and how key parts of your business relate. You get the chance to hover over your business and life and see the whole puzzle for the first time. You see how the pieces should fit together and which big pieces are missing or out of place. You gain clarity about where you are and where you want to be. You see beyond the details to the bigger horizon -- much easier to plan that way. You get to face reality and decide which strategic changes you want to make. You gain new perspectives. You see new options and opportunities. What a powerful and profitable vantage point.
