Through the years, as a business coach, I have talked about and written about several enemies which diminish the effectiveness, satisfaction, and results of most business owners: busyness; denial; distractions; complexity; an owner's limiting beliefs; a lack of clarity; lack of plans or not regularly updating plans to make critical adjustments; lack of on-going accountability; and maybe the worse one of all, an unwillingness of an owner to invest in themselves to elevate their knowledge, mindsets, skills and habits. But in my experiences, a new and insidious enemy has emerged and it's a subset of busyness, denial and distractions ... it's constant and never-ending noise.
That's correct. Noise. Many business owners do not want to face the truth about what is broken in their business and personal life. As such, they never slow down or quiet down so they can avoid being alone with their thoughts and the reality of their situation. Instead, whether consciously or unconsciously, they keep busy, distracted and surrounded by noise. They rarely allow themselves to have a quiet moment to reflect, assess and think.
Except for praying or visiting a house of worship, most owners seldom wind down or quiet down. They fill up their work and personal life with constant noise and distractions: their iPod, radio, TV, e-mail, cell phone, Blackberry, CDs, web surfing, movies, meetings, paperwork, fire-drills, low-value tasks and projects, etc. There is always noise at work, in the car, and at home. Even their vacations, meant to re-charge their batteries, are filled with endless activities and constant noise. Stop the madness! This is no way to run a business or lead a satisfying life.
When was the last time you got away from the chaos, complexity, and confusion of your work environment and spent some time in deep and quiet thought? When was the last time you stepped away from the details of your business and life and evaluated the big picture? Probably seldom if ever.
It's as if owners are trying to escape from and deny reality. If they stay busy enough and it's noisy enough, they never have to stop and reflect. That way there is no true accountability. It's like they are driving a car extremely fast with the radio cranked up and ignoring where they are and where they want to go. They are just driving aimlessly and recklessly and confusing activity with accomplishment. As a business coach, believe me when I say, that's a dangerous, costly and workaholic approach to business ... and your problems will just multiply and intensify.
