As business owners, we should periodically slow down, catch our breath, and reflect on our many blessings. We should try and practice the "attitude of gratitude" throughout the year and especially on worthy occasions. Today is one of those days.
On this Memorial Day 2008, it is very fitting that we should take the time to remember, thank and honor all the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation, us and our families. It is proper to pay tribute to those who bravely served our country through the years and those now serving. If not for their dedication, sacrifices, and courage, we would not be living in a free and secure country and enjoying our numerous rights and freedoms as Americans and as business owners.
As business owners, we should be especially grateful that our military men and women put on the uniform and answered the call to serve our great country. Because of them, we live in the United States of America and are allowed to freely and legally start and own our own business. Take a moment and really let that sink in. Think about the many countries around the world where you would NOT have the right nor opportunity to own your own enterprise, land or home. Where you could NOT enjoy the fruit of your creativity, risk taking and efforts. Where you could NOT chart your own destiny. While owning a business has its share of tough and trying days, I am certain none of us would trade our free enterprise system for any other on the planet.
Though we get very busy and caught up in our own world, we should not take our life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, including our entrepreneurial dreams, for granted. The men and women in uniform who gave their lives, wounded bodies and service in order for us to be free deserve our remembrance and respect. We should all count our blessings that we are citizens of and entrepreneurs in this great nation. Let us honor all the fallen, wounded, former and current soldiers by living our lives fully, acknowledging and appreciating our rights and freedoms, and being proud of our country.
My father passed away suddenly and without any warning this last October at the young age of 70. Though he never saw battle, and last wore his Naval Officer's uniform over 45 years ago, I was touched to my soul when Navy sailors unexpectedly appeared at the cemetery, saluted our arrival, played Taps, and presented my Mom with the flag from his casket. Without question, the military never ever forget their own. Neither should we. God bless America.
